Who Just Endorsed Orlando’s Most Controversial Policy?
Orlando Nexus Daily – In a political twist that has left many Orlando residents stunned, a former mayor turned independent political figurehas officially endorsed what many call Orlando’s most controversial policy in years the proposed Public Safety Infrastructure Expansion Bill, commonly known as “PSIE-25.”
The unexpected endorsement came from Carlos Mendoza, a well-known centrist and former two-term Orlando mayor, during a surprise appearance at a local town hall meeting this Tuesday.
“I may not agree with every detail,” Mendoza told the crowd, “but this is the bold action Orlando needs to stay ahead of public safety threats, urban growth, and traffic chaos.”
His statement immediately went viral across local social media and news channels, sparking both praise and outrage from all sides of the political spectrum.
The PSIE-25 Bill, first introduced earlier this year by City Councilwoman Natalie Rhodes. Proponents argue the bill will modernize Orlando’s safety infrastructure, reduce response times, and deter violent crime, which spiked by 7.8% over the past 18 months.
Critics, however, see the bill as an overreach of authority, a privacy threat, and a dismantling of community-based accountability.

“This is a strategic endorsement that may be less about the bill and more about shaping the future political field. Mendoza’s support lends legitimacy to Rhodes and perhaps signals a broader alliance we didn’t see coming.”
And it seems to be working.
Since his statement, Rhodes’ approval rating among undecided voters has jumped 12%, according to a flash poll conducted by Nexus Pulse.
The response from Orlando locals has been anything but quiet. Within hours, hundreds took to community forums, Reddit, and neighborhood Facebook groups.
One resident wrote:
“Mendoza just lost my respect. He used to stand for people’s rights now he’s standing for surveillance and curfews?”
Another commenter fired back:
“Carlos is thinking long-term. Orlando’s growing fast. If we don’t invest in infrastructure and safety now, we’ll regret it later.”
A local student coalition has already organized a protest scheduled for Friday, stating that “curfews and facial recognition tech aren’t how you build safe cities engagement and transparency are.”
With the 2025 Orlando mayoral election heating up, this endorsement may tip the scales in Councilwoman Rhodes’ favor. She has been trailing behind progressive challenger Malik Ayers, who strongly opposes PSIE-25 and has made civil rights the centerpiece of his campaign.
If Mendoza’s influence sways moderate and independent voters, Rhodes may gain the momentum she desperately needs to rise in the polls.
Insiders also speculate that Mendoza could be positioning himself as a future city manager or advisor, depending on who wins the election raising questions about behind-the-scenes negotiations.
The PSIE-25 Bill is still set for a full city council vote in August. If passed, it could be implemented in phases by early 2026, starting with downtown Orlando and expanding outward.
Until then, the city remains divided caught between promises of safety and concerns over surveillance, between nostalgic trust in old leadership and new-age demands for rights and reform.
When Carlos Mendoza endorsed PSIE-25, he reignited a firestorm that had barely begun to settle. His support gave political weight to an already polarizing proposal, and with Orlando’s future hanging in the balance, the endorsement may shape more than just public opinion it may determine who runs the city next year.
